Maria Sharapova, tennis goddess, has been busy in the days leading up to the US Open. MSNBC reports,
Maria Sharapova was all over the city the past few days, unveiling her new perfume, showing off the diamond-encrusted watch she designed, doing TV shows and modeling her latest tennis dress.
The Fashion Monitor has a first-look at that new tennis dress.
Maria Sharapova showcased her newest on-court look which will be sleek and simple, reflecting her penchant for dresses and colors.
Maria Sharapova, 18, unveiled the Nike A-line dress she will wear at the upcoming matches at US Open.
While some tennis players like to make bold fashion statements at the U.S. Open, Maria opted for a light blue number with yellow piping made of Nike’s Sphere cooling fabric.
“I love to look elegant and this dress is very light and cool,” Maria Sharapova at a press conference at the Town Tennis Club here. “The best thing about tennis is that you can wear cute little dresses and express your individuality.”
Maria Sharapova could wear a burlap sack and still look elegant, but those “cute little dresses” will do.

ESPN is expanding beyond the confines of television and creating a total interactive media experience.
[T]he idea that you’ll only watch television by plunking yourself in front of a 60-inch plasma screen is growing quaint. Home networks will put TV on your desktop; a proliferation of wireless technologies, from 3G to WiMax, will let you take it anywhere. And in a few years, when the cable companies finally dump their bandwidth-hogging analog channels and go all-digital, they’ll be able to offer broadband at speeds that will put TV-quality video on the Net. Professional television will no doubt remain distinguishable from the rising tide of videoblogs, but the age of one-to-many broadcasting will be over for good.
ESPN’s response: Bring it on. “We are not a television company,” declares John Skipper, whose job as head of most non-television operations, including ESPN.com and ESPN the Magazine, is to lead the outfit into the post-network era. “We are a sports media company. We’re gonna surround consumers with media. We’re not gonna let them cut us off and move away from our brand.”
ESPN plans to serve up content in any way possible, creating media suitable for all platforms.

1. It changes how you watch a game.
2. It glorifies stat accumulators at the expense of team players.
3. It makes heroes out of problem children.
4. The geek factor.
5. The death of the NFL offseason.
6. It’s ridiculously and unfairly skewered toward offense and touchdown-makers.
7. All those confusing and divided loyalties.
8. The expert phenomena.
9. The money aspect.
10. The trendiness of it all.

The world of women’s tennis has a new leader. The BBC reports that tennis sensation Maria Sharapova is now ranked number one in the world.
Maria Sharapova has replaced injured American Lindsay Davenport as world number one.
The 18-year-old, who has won three titles this year, is the first Russian woman to reach the top of the WTA rankings since their inception in 1975.
Sharapova would have toppled Davenport earlier this month but was forced to pull out of the JPMorgan Chase Open because of a chest injury.
“It’s a dream come true to become number one in the world,” she said.
Anna Kournikova only wishes she was this good.

Can you spot the difference? As the fabric of the sport changes, marketers push up against the boundaries, writes Oakland Ross
What’s this fuss about Maria Sharapova’s bosom?
Like many of life’s great questions, the answer depends on whom you ask.
Of course, this is nothing new for the world of women’s tennis. Just look at Anna Kournikova, known more for her sex appeal than her tennis game.

A fan falling from the sky, that’s interesting and all, but what I want to know is why there were so few people whipping out digital cameras and camera phones. I thought this was the digital age!
Fan faces charges after jumping from upper deck
A fan who jumped from the Yankee Stadium upper deck to the netting behind home plate was released from a hospital Wednesday and appeared in court to face criminal charges.
Eighteen-year-old Scott Harper plummeted about 40 feet onto the large screen during the eighth inning of Tuesday night’s game between New York and the Chicago White Sox. After the final out, he was carried on a stretcher from the ballpark to Lincoln Medical Center, his head immobilized in a neck brace.

Football (soccer) fans in Auckland took to the streets when women in bikinis interrupted the English FA Cup.
Soccer fans forced to watch women in bikinis
May 23 2005 at 07:25PM
Wellington, New Zealand - Enraged football fans took to the streets of Auckland at four on Sunday morning, looking for a bar showing the English FA Cup’s outcome after the local Sky TV channel switched over to another programme at full time.
With Arsenal and Manchester United in a scoreless tie after the regulation 90 minutes of play, Sky Sport went to its next scheduled programme, “Sports Illustrated 2005 Swimwear at Play”, the New Zealand Herald reported on Monday.
Fans left watching a parade of bikini-clad women missed 30 minutes of extra time and the first penalty shootout in the cup’s 134-year history.
About 150 to 200 people at Auckland’s Albion Hotel who described themselves as “gutted” when the coverage ended took to the streets of New Zealand’s largest city in search of another bar showing the game, manager Paul Hafford told the paper.
Sky Digital customers found the continued coverage on another sports channel, but subscribers to the cheaper UHF service missed out.
“Obviously, there was a problem, and the UHF coverage finished before the end of the game. Why that happened I don’t know,” Sky’s director of sports, Kevin Cameron, said after fans bombarded the channel with protests.
