Maria Sharapova wins US Open

Catch-up post #2: Maria Sharapova proved over the weekend that she has the looks and the skills by becoming only the second Russian woman ever to win the US Open. After winning Wimbledon two years ago and earning herself a whopping $19 million in endorsement deals, Maria went on to lose the next five Grand Slam semis, including four straight loses to the woman she had to beat to win the Open. None of that deterred her, though, as she thoroughly deconstructed Justine Henin-Hardenne, the five-time Grand Slam champion, by smashing overheads, serving timely aces and rifling balls deep into the corner.

Tennis is too sexy

Keeley Hazell in Zoo tennis issue

Killjoy tennis chiefs have outlawed skimpy outfits at this year’s Wimbledon, which starts today.

They want spectators to keep their eye on the ball, not on the athletic figures of the gorgeous female players.

So they have issued a strict new dress code banning gear deemed too sexy or low-cut.

That means a bevy of babes must cover up. What a glaring fault — especially when you check the form of stars like former champ Maria Sharapova.

Martina Hingis still has it

Martina Hingis, the former princess of tennis, proved that she still has what it takes when she defeated the current princess of tennis and defending champion, Maria Sharapova.

Martina Hingis hammered Maria Sharapova 6-3 6-1 in the pair’s first meeting to reach the first final of her comeback at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

The former world number one, tournament winner in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002, outplayed defending champion Sharapova.

“It feels good to be in the finals once again - I never thought I would make it this far,” said Hingis, 25.

Martina Hingis is back

Before Maria Sharapova and before Anna Kournikova, there was Martina Hingis … and she’s back. After having retired in 2002 due to foot and ankle injuries, the 25-year-old Swiss returned to the game with a stunning 6-2 6-1 victory over Maria Vento-Kabchi at the Australian Hardcourt Championships.

“I was a little nervous,” admitted the former world number one, who has won five Grand Slam titles in her career.

Asked whether she was concerned by her nervous start, Hingis responded: “Not really. I knew I could play better than that.

“It was just a matter of time and getting the first point and the first game. After that I started breathing.

“I don’t know what else I should have done today better than what I did. The score says it all.”

Hingis conceded she would have to improve if she is to challenge the top-ranked players but is in upbeat mood.

Now when will they start milking it for all its worth — pitting the current princess of tennis, Maria, against the former keeper of the crown, Martina. That would be a great exhibition match to open the new year.

Maria Sharapova serves up glamour

Maria Sharapova, tennis goddess, has been busy in the days leading up to the US Open. MSNBC reports,

Maria Sharapova was all over the city the past few days, unveiling her new perfume, showing off the diamond-encrusted watch she designed, doing TV shows and modeling her latest tennis dress.

The Fashion Monitor has a first-look at that new tennis dress.

Maria Sharapova showcased her newest on-court look which will be sleek and simple, reflecting her penchant for dresses and colors.

Maria Sharapova, 18, unveiled the Nike A-line dress she will wear at the upcoming matches at US Open.

While some tennis players like to make bold fashion statements at the U.S. Open, Maria opted for a light blue number with yellow piping made of Nike’s Sphere cooling fabric.

“I love to look elegant and this dress is very light and cool,” Maria Sharapova at a press conference at the Town Tennis Club here. “The best thing about tennis is that you can wear cute little dresses and express your individuality.”

Maria Sharapova could wear a burlap sack and still look elegant, but those “cute little dresses” will do.
