Win a date with Cindy Crawford

Permalink | October 26th, 2006

Cindy Crawford auction

Cindy Crawford, remember her? Well now you can win a date with her … and by “win”, they mean bid, and by “date” they mean a meet and greet makeover. However they package this marketing ploy, if you have the cash you and a friend can hang with Cindy in New York when she announces her partnership with Remington grooming products.

Feeling guilty about bidding? Don’t worry, all of the proceeds will benefit charity. And when you remember that a charity lunch date with Jessica Biel fetched $30,000, Cindy’s current $7,600 leading bid makes this look like a bargain basement deal.

Starbucks underestimates email promotion

Permalink | September 1st, 2006

Starbucks logo

Starbucks recently underestimated the power of viral emailing. In an internal promotion Starbucks emailed a few of its employees in Atlanta on August 23rd. The email, with the subject Try your coffee, offered customers a free grande beverage between noon and 9pm through September 30th. Those that received the initial email were encouraged to pass it on to their friends and family. You can imagine what happened next — the e-mail spread faster than Starbucks predicted, landing in e-mail boxes coast to coast, as well as being sold on auction sites like eBay. Starbucks has since invalidated the offer saying that the coupons were distributed and modified beyond their control.

Hold on a second, eBay?! You have to be a serious caffeine addict to buy a coupon for free coffee off of eBay.

Buy an Enzo, get a girlfriend

Leila selling a Ferrari Enzo

Supposedly the story goes like this — Leila, a 26-year-old singer from Germany, is looking for love; but she’s not looking for just anybody. Besides being between ages of 40 and 58 (if possible), she’s also looking for a man wealthy enough to buy her Enzo — and then take her home with it. Bidding for the Enzo starts at €1.25 million (about $1.5 million USD). We always knew if you get the car, you’d get the girls, but this just takes that statement to a whole new level.

Google Checkout

Google wants your money … and your credit card information, and your address, and your telephone number. After nearly a year of testing, Google has finally unleashed its new payment service, Google Checkout, which promises to make online shopping more convenient and give advertisers another reason to pour more money into the internet search leader. Although Google denies it, Google Checkout puts direct pressure on the current leader of the pack, PayPal.

Initially, Google’s aim is to make it easier and faster for people to buy products advertised on Google. However, with Starbucks and Buy.com quickly hopping onto the bandwagon, it will only be a matter of time until Checkout expands beyond the Google borders.

eBay avenger

It happened before, it was bound to happen again. Amir Massoud Tofangsazan allegedly sold a defective laptop on eBay, and waited two months before actually shipping it to the buyer. Thomas Sawyer, the individual who purchased the laptop, was so upset when he finally received faulty merchandise that he decided to take revenge. Thomas noticed that the drive of the laptop wasn’t erased, so what does he do? What any self-respecting person bent on revenge and utter humilitation would do — post the information online.

Thomas created a blog (NSFW) and posted everything from Amir’s resume to scandalous images of women’s legs on the subway, to candid pictures of girls and guys, to pictures of Amir himself … and, of course, porn he found on the hard drive.

Since initially posting the site Thomas has offered to take it down in exchange for a refund and an apology.

Yahoo! heart eBay, Google heart Dell

eBay and Yahoo!

In a bid to challenge Google’s market dominance, Yahoo! and eBay have announced that they have forged an advertising alliance. Yahoo! will be allowed to sell advertising on eBay while using PayPal to service the payments. While it sounds like a power play, neither party reaps large benefits from the union. eBay will receive new ways to generate money, but they still do not address the rise in competition such as Google’s Base and even Yahoo!’s own auction service. Yahoo! will gain a potentially huge expansion for its advertising business, however they just lost their largest single partner, MSN, when they decided to sell their own advertising.

Meanwhile, in the other camp, Google has announced a new alliance with computer make Dell. All Dell computers will ship with Google software already installed on them. The software includes several personal computer applications, a Google toolbar and a co-branded homepage. This move allows Google to directly challenge Microsoft’s software dominance.

Million Crystal Body Diamond Covered Mercedes-Benz SL Million Crystal Body

What better way to compliment a diamond covered Mercedes SL than with a crystal covered model. Part erotic performance art, part marketing scheme, eBay super-seller Marion von Kuczkowski has developed a rather unique campaign — cover a model with one million Svarowski crystals and then sell them off for one euro each, slowly exposing the body of the crystal encased model, Chantal.

One million Swarovski crystals were needed in all to cover our breath-taking model with these sparkling little stones, thus creating an erotic overall-artwork.

With each purchased stone you uncover the artwork a little bit more and you help to overcome frontiers and make the earth sparkle! No matter whether Berlin, Tokyo, New York, Cape Town or Sydney - each purchaser will be sent his stone!

von Kuczkowski plans on auctioning off the last few crystals to the highest bidder for charity, with the winner of the final crystal to receive their prize hand delivered by Chantal herself.

You can buy it on eBay

You can buy it on eBay

You can buy it on eBay … but “it” may be a fake. Angry users are finding that more and more knock-offs and fakes are populating eBay’s listing, and the internet auction giant feels no obligation to do anything about it.

Of course, fakes are sold everywhere, but the anonymity and reach of the Internet makes it perfect for selling knockoffs. And eBay, the biggest online marketplace, is the center of a new universe of counterfeit with virtually no policing.

EBay, based in San Jose, Calif., argues that it has no obligation to investigate counterfeiting claims unless the complaint comes from a “rights owner,” a party holding a trademark or copyright. A mere buyer who believes an item is a fake has almost no recourse.

“We never take possession of the goods sold through eBay, and we don’t have any expertise,” said Hani Durzy, an eBay spokesman. “We’re not clothing experts. We’re not car experts, and we’re not jewelry experts. We’re experts at building a marketplace and bringing buyers and sellers together.”

Buyers and large companies feel otherwise — Tiffany & Co. has recently sued eBay for facilitating trade of fake Tiffany’s items. Should the suit prove successful, eBay’s core business model will be seriously threatened.
