A Presidential Apology

On Wednesday good ol’ George Dubya stuck his foot in his mouth yet again when he unknowingly questioned a legally blind correspondent over his choice to wear sunglasses:
The President: Yes, Peter. Are you going to ask that question with shades on?
Peter: I can take them off.
The President: I’m interested in the shade look, seriously.
Peter: All right, I’ll keep it, then.
The President: For the viewers, there’s no sun.
(Laughter)
Peter: I guess it depends on your perspective.
(Laughter)
The President: Touche.
(Laughter)
Peter Wallsten is legally blind and suffers from Stargardt’s Disease, a degenerative disease affecting the part of the eye sensitive to light. Studies have shown sunglasses help slow the degeneration. The President, who was most likely informed of Wallsten’s condition following the press conference, called him to apologize. Wallsten told him he accepted his apology, though it wasn’t necessary and he didn’t want the president to treat him any differently.
