Google Office

Google is challenging Microsoft’s dominance in the office tools arena by teaming up with Sun to distribute Java under the Google toolbar.

Under the deal, Google will distribute Java along with the search company’s toolbar application, the two companies said.

The deal, whose terms were not disclosed, would make it easier for PC users to run applications based on the Java programming language. That includes the free productivity suite OpenOffice, a challenger to Office, a major cash cow for Microsoft.

Sitting on a Linux box, OpenOffice has proved itself to be quite handy. However, it still has a some catching up to do — especially if their primary goal is to convert people. In that sense it’s similar to Gimp, while it’s a great product, given the choice I honestly have to say I’d still go with Photoshop.
