Cuba celebrates Castro’s 79th birthday
Permalink | August 14th, 2005Fidel Castro has been busy celebrating his 79th birthday. In power since 1959 he is the world’s longest serving leader; and, in defiance to the U.S. and dissidents, has shown no interest in stepping down.
Dozens of Cuban children danced and presented a huge cake, while state-run newspapers and documentary films paid tribute to his 46 years in charge.
A letter in the Communist daily Granma to the “dearly loved Fidel” praised his “guerrilla spirit of just ideals”.
In July U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced a new post whose sole effort is to accelerate the demise of the Castro regime in Cuba.
